Nicholas Aherne is writing his PhD thesis on the ritual function of sarcophagi in Roman Phoenicia. He was awarded a BA in Classical Civilisation from the University of Warwick and an MSt in Classical Archaeology from the University of Oxford, where he specialised in material and visual culture of the Roman Provinces and neighbouring civilisations. In addition to writing papers on sarcophagi, grave goods, and funerary ritual, Nicholas is publishing on Roman domestic space, graffiti and military-civilian interaction in religious space at Dura-Europos, and Mithraism. Nicholas is developing digital skills to produce 3D models, visualisations, and computational modelling for the reconstruction of ancient lived experience for research, teaching, and heritage and public outreach purposes.
